Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said today that Turkey’s armed and security forces have been authorised to carry out actions against any targets or facilities belonging to the PKK terrorist group or its Syrian affiliate, the PYD/YPG, in Syria and Iraq. “Anything belonging to the PKK/YPG, from infrastructure to energy facilities, in Syria and Iraq, are now legitimate targets for our forces,” Fidan said during a press conference in Ankara, three days after the foiled terrorist attack near the Turkish parliament in Ankara.
Investigations into the Ankara attack, in which one of the terrorists blew himself up with explosives and another was shot dead by police, indicates that the perpetrators of the failed attack came from Syria, where the YPG has a significant presence and for years has received funding and weapons from the United States. In this way, Fidan warned “third parties”, without mentioning them, to stay away from PKK/YPG installations in Syria and Iraq.
“The response of the Turkish armed forces to this terrorist attack will be extremely clear. They will once again regret having committed such an action,” the minister insisted. Turkey’s top security officials, including Defence Minister Yaşar Güler, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, and Fidan himself, also met in Ankara today, a day after the Turkish army bombed 16 PKK/YPG targets yesterday in northern Iraq, near the Turkish border.
