Azerbaijan announced on Thursday the arrest of Arayik Harutyunyan, the Armenian separatist leader of the self-proclaimed Artsakh Republic, following the operation in late September that culminated in the disarming of pro-Armenian forces in Karabakh and the dissolution of Artsakh, a state not recognised by any sovereign country. Harutyunyan, who led military operations during the so-called second Karabakh war in 2020 (which culminated in an undisputed Azerbaijani victory), had resigned on 19 September, shortly before the Azerbaijani operation in the region.
The authorities in Baku reported that the Armenian separatist leader, who was arrested in the Karabakh capital of Stepanakert (Khankendi), is accused of war crimes, among other charges; Harutyunyan had a warrant for his arrest from the Azeri authorities since the 2020 war, when he ordered launching missiles against the Azeri city of Ganja – Azerbaijan’s second largest city – causing numerous civilian deaths. Earlier, Azerbaijan also arrested Arkady Gukasyan and Bako Sahakyan, two former presidents of the pro-Armenian republic of Artsakh, and David Iskhanyan, speaker of the region’s parliament.
