St Mary’s Church, located in the Büyükdere neighbourhood of Istanbul and where a week ago a person was killed during mass in an attack claimed by the Daesh terrorist group, reopened its doors and celebrated its first mass after the attack on Sunday with dozens of faithful in attendance, amid extensive security measures deployed around the building.
Earlier on 1 February, Catholic religious authorities in Istanbul and Turkey – including the Vatican ambassador to Ankara – had carried out a “purification ritual” to re-consecrate the church and pray for the soul of the victim, 52-year-old Tuncer Murat Cihan, whose image was placed yesterday during the mass in a dedicated place in the church, surrounded by candles. Some 25 people linked to Daesh – including the two perpetrators of the attack – have so far been arrested in connection with the attack.
