At least two people were killed and six others wounded during a shooting that took place at the Çağlayan Courthouse on the European side of Istanbul during an attack by members of the DHKP-C terrorist group, according to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, who said the attackers – a man and a woman – fired at a checkpoint. One of the terrorists reportedly opened fire at the checkpoint and then tried to cross the esplanade in front of the building, while the other fired several shots at police officers guarding the entrance.
The two dead were reportedly the terrorists themselves, who were shot and killed as they attempted to enter the huge judicial complex, while three policemen and three civilians were wounded. A third attacker who managed to flee after the shooting was captured by the police shortly afterwards. Several images in the Turkish media and on social media showed scenes of high tension in the courthouse, with several people trying to shield themselves from gunfire as two lifeless bodies were laying on the ground outside.
Following the terrorist attack, the area around the courthouse was cordoned off by police amid heavy security as ambulances took the injured to hospitals in the area. The official name of the Çağlayan Palace of Justice is actually Mehmet Selim Kiraz Complex, precisely in honour of a prosecutor who was killed in 2015 by DHKP-C terrorists after holding him hostage for several hours; located in the European district of Kağıthane, it was crowded with people when the attack took place at 11:46 a.m. local time (9:46 CET).
