Turkey’s foreign minister harshly criticized several Western countries that simultaneously announced yesterday the closure of their consulates in Istanbul, citing “security reasons” and asking their citizens to avoid crowded places in the face of an alleged threat of an attack on foreigners in Istanbul. “If these countries have intelligence about a terrorist attack, shouldn’t they inform us? Who will attack and where? They have not said anything,” said Çavuşoğlu, who accused the US, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and Sweden of doing this “intentionally” to give an image to tourists that Turkey is not safe.
