Thousands of Turks took to the streets of central Istanbul on 1 January in a large demonstration organised on New Year‘s Day to protest against Israel’s bloody war in Gaza – where 22,000 Palestinians have already died – and to condemn terrorism following recent attacks by the PKK terrorist group that killed 12 Turkish soldiers.
The event, organised by more than 300 organisations in Turkey, and dubbed “Compassion for our martyrs, support for Palestine, and condemnation of Israel”, began at the Hagia Sophia, Eminönü (New Mosque), Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque) and Süleymaniye mosques with a prayer for the soldiers killed by the PKK and for the Palestinians killed in the Israel’s bombardment of Gaza that began on 7 October; the march then headed towards Istanbul’s Galata Bridge, with banners written in Turkish, English and Arabic. Several officials, including Turkish Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak, participated in the demonstration.
