Hundreds of thousands of people attended a massive demonstration in Istanbul on Saturday organised by Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan’s AKP party to protest against the Israeli army’s bombardment of Gaza, which has already killed more than 8,000 Palestinian civilians, 3,200 of them children. During the event, Erdoğan delivered a speech in which he condemned not only the state of Israel but also the West for what is happening in the region. “The West is also the main responsible for the massacre in Gaza,” said the Turkish president, who accused the Israeli government of committing “war crimes“.
“Those who cry crocodile tears for the civilians killed in the Ukraine-Russia war are now quietly observing the death of thousands of innocent children,” lamented Erdoğan, who accused Western countries of legitimising Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. “Israel has been openly committing war crimes for 22 days, but Western leaders are not even capable of calling for a ceasefire from Israel,” he insisted. The protest organised in Istanbul against the bombing of Gaza, which organisers said was attended by 1.5 million people, was also attended by legendary British singer Cat Stevens, known after his conversion to the Muslim faith as Yusuf Islam, who in a speech called for an “end to the bombing of innocent families, and especially little children”.
