Turkey’s foreign minister, Hakan Fidan, warned Wednesday that an Israeli ground operation in Gaza would only serve to increase the “savagery” being shown by the Israeli army and unleash an “absolute massacre” in the Palestinian territory, while urging the international community to act to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, or face an escalation across the Middle East.
Fidan, on an official visit to Qatar, once again criticised the “double standards” of “some countries in America and Europe” that have sided with Israel and do not condemn “the destruction and disaster in Gaza“, and assured that Turkey will not allow Palestinians to be “thrown” off their land, insisting on the two-state solution as the only possible way to end the conflict. His Qatari counterpart, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, also argued against the use of double standards by the West, even though both Turkey and Qatar are important allies of Western countries in the region: “It is not permissible to condemn the killing of civilians in one context (after the Hamas attack) and justify it in the other,” Al-Thani said, referring to the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, which has included schools, churches and hospitals.
