US President Joe Biden has warned Israel that any decision to militarily occupy Gaza would be a “big mistake”. “I think it would be a big mistake,” Biden said when asked about the issue during an interview on CBS, adding that “Hamas does not represent all of the Palestinian people“. While admitting that invading the Strip and eliminating the Palestinian armed group is “a necessity”, the US president insisted that such an operation cannot be a prelude to a permanent occupation without a Palestinian government.
“There must be a Palestinian authority (in Gaza). There has to be a path to a Palestinian state,” Biden stressed, insisting on a two-state solution as the path to peace in the region. Asked during the interview whether he saw the possibility of US troops participating in the war between Israel and Hamas, the US president replied: “I don’t think that’s necessary. Israel has one of the best fighting forces in the region. But I guarantee that we will provide them with everything they need. Meanwhile, Israel on Monday denied media reports, based on Egyptian sources, that the Israeli army would declare a ceasefire in Gaza to allow the evacuation of foreigners through the Rafah crossing.
