Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan criticised on Wednesday Israel for not acting “like a state” in Gaza following the series of massive bombardments launched by the Israeli army on the besieged Palestinian territory in response to the surprise offensive launched last Saturday by Hamas, which have already killed 950 people and injured more than 5,000, according to official Palestinian figures.
“Israel must not forget that if it acts like a (terrorist) organisation instead of a state, it will end up being treated like one. Bombing civilian buildings, killing civilians, blocking humanitarian aid… these are acts of a terrorist organisation, and not of a state,” Erdoğan stressed. “A war must follow an ethic, and both sides must respect it. Unfortunately, this principle is being gravely violated in Israel and Gaza,” insisted the Turkish president, who once again denounced both the “killings of civilians on Israeli territory” and “the blind massacre of innocents in a Gaza subjected to constant bombardment”. “A conflict carried out with all kinds of shameful methods is not a war, it is a massacre,” he added.
“The disproportionate and unscrupulous attacks on Gaza could put Israel in an unexpected and undesirable place in the eyes of world public opinion,” Erdoğan warned again in a speech from Ankara. The Turkish president has also expressed concern over the presence of the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, the largest in the US fleet, in the Eastern Mediterranean. “What is the US aircraft carrier doing in Israel? It is going to start carrying out massacres there, attacking and destroying Gaza,” Erdoğan lamented during a press conference with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, in a official visit to Ankara.
