Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan called on Israel to urgently allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, which is under total siege by Israel, while criticising the Israeli army’s collective punishment of Gaza’s civilian population, which he said would only lead to more tensions and “more tears”. Erdoğan, who claimed that Turkey currently has a “security problem” with the US, criticised Washington for its double standards on terrorism, supporting Israel against Hamas while providing weapons, supplies and funding to groups such as the YPG, the Syrian branch of the PKK, which the US itself recognises as a terrorist organisation.
In a separate statement, Turkey’s foreign ministry called Israel’s order to evacuate the entire Palestinian population of northern Gaza in just 24 hours “unacceptable“. In a statement, Ankara urged Israel to reverse this “grave mistake” and “immediately cease its brutal and relentless actions” against Gaza’s civilian population. The text added that forcing a migration in a confined area where 2.5 million people live, deprived of energy, water and food, while subjected to constant shelling, is “inhumane” and a clear violation of international law.
