Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential election held on 5 November, in which the Republican candidate is said to have clearly beaten his Democratic rival Kamala Harris, according to the latest results.
‘I congratulate my friend Donald Trump, who has won the US presidential election after a great struggle and has been re-elected,’ Erdoğan said in a statement posted on his official account on the social networking site X.
In the same message, the Turkish leader expressed his confidence that under the new Trump administration relations between Turkey and the United States will be strengthened, and that a solution to the conflict in Ukraine and the crisis over Israel‘s offensive on Gaza will be achieved: ‘In this new era that begins after the decision of the American people, we hope that relations between Turkey and the US will be strengthened and that regional and global crises and wars, especially the Palestinian issue and the war between Russia and Ukraine, will be ended,’ he said.
‘I believe that there will be more efforts to achieve a more just world. I am confident that the elections will be beneficial for our ally and friend people of the United States, and for all humanity,’ concluded the statement released by the Turkish president.
The message released by Erdoğan comes after the most recent official figures show that Donald Trump won 277 of the 270 electors needed to become the 47th president of the USA and 51% of the vote (more than 71 million voters), while his rival Kamala Harris won only 224 electors and 47.5% of the vote (around 66 million voters), mainly on the west coast and in the northeastern states of the United States. Trump thus becomes the second president in the country’s history to be elected for two non-consecutive terms after Grover Cleveland, who was the 22nd and 24th US president between 1885-1889 and between (1893-1897), respectively.
