Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan praised Spain’s stance on Gaza during his welcome in Istanbul to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, praising his country’s ‘principled and honourable’ position in the face of the brutal Israeli offensive.
According to Turkish media reports citing official sources from the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye, the two leaders spoke during a closed-door meeting at the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul about bilateral relations between Spain and Turkey, as well as current regional and global issues.
Sánchez, who has openly criticised Israel accusing it of committing ‘barbaric acts’ and outright ‘massacres’ in Gaza, has proposed submitting a resolution to the UN for the International Court of Justice to examine whether the Israeli blockade on humanitarian aid entering Gaza constitutes a violation of international law. ‘Palestine is bleeding before our eyes,’ he said recently during a speech at the Arab League summit in Baghdad.
Erdoğan expressed his gratitude to the Spanish Prime Minister for his ‘decisive and honourable’ stance in the face of the ‘genocide in Gaza’; Turkish president also stressed that Ankara’s priority is to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the civilian population in the Strip – especially the thousands of babies whose lives are at serious risk due to lack of aid – while emphasising that the oppression of the Palestinians can only be ended through the joint efforts of the international community.
Turkey maintains its goal of becoming part of the EU
On Turkey’s goal of becoming a member of the European Union, Erdoğan reaffirmed Ankara’s determination to achieve this objective, which Spain has always supported, and called on Brussels to take constructive steps in this direction to revitalise the process at a critical moment for the future of Europe.
Regarding the current war between Russia and Ukraine, the Turkish president made it clear during the meeting with Sánchez that his government will continue diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, following the recent exchange of prisoners agreed in Istanbul. ‘The opportunity to end the war must not be wasted,’ insisted the Turkish politician.
After the meeting with Sánchez, Erdoğan also stated that efforts are underway to increase the volume of trade between Turkey and Spain, and that ‘both countries will continue to strive to advance cooperation in many areas, especially in the defence industry, transport’ and other strategic areas.
