Turkey has strongly condemned the new Israeli attacks on Gaza that have caused hundreds of deaths, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of defying humanity and international law and of carrying out a ‘genocidal policy’, seriously endangering the fragile ceasefire in force since 19 January with Hamas, which for now has not responded to the bombings.
‘The massacre of hundreds of Palestinians in Israel’s attacks on Gaza this morning (18 March) demonstrates that the Netanyahu government’s genocide policy has entered a new phase. Israel defies humanity through its violations of international law and universal values in the gravest way. At a time when efforts to achieve global peace and stability are intensifying, the aggression displayed by the Israeli government threatens the future of the region. It is unacceptable that Israel is causing a new spiral of violence‘ denounced an official statement published in the last few hours by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
‘The international community must take a decisive stance against Israel to ensure a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the delivery of humanitarian aid. As Türkiye, we reiterate our unwavering support for the rightful cause of the Palestinian people and reaffirm our commitment to contributing to efforts aimed at securing peace and stability in the region’ the statement concluded.
Early this morning Israel launched a wave of bombings on Gaza in which at least 413 Palestinians have been killed, many of them women and children. The Gaza health ministry also said that ‘a large number of victims are still under the rubble and work is continuing to get them out.’
Netanyahu, with Trump’s support, ordered the bombings
The air strikes, which came as a surprise and threaten to restart the war after 17 months of conflict, were authorised by Netanyahu himself after Hamas rejected the latest Israeli demands, and the Israeli government has warned that they could increase. ‘From now on, Israel will act against Hamas with increasing military force,’ the Israeli prime minister said. The United States was informed prior to the attack, and Donald Trump himself expressed his support for the attacks.
These bombings, which also took place in the middle of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, have increased fears for the fate of the hostages still in the hands of Hamas. In the last few hours, a senior member of the Islamist group has described Netanyahu’s attacks as a ‘death sentence’ for the hostages, although for now Hamas has not responded to the attacks in an attempt to save the fragile truce.
Besides Turkey, the new attacks on Gaza by Israel have received widespread condemnation internationally. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, was shocked by the large number of deaths, while Russia warned against the ‘spiral of escalation’ in the region and China called for urgent measures to avoid a ‘humanitarian disaster’ in Gaza. Egypt and Jordan also condemned the ‘barbaric bombings of the Gaza Strip’, while Iran condemned Israel’s ‘continuing genocide’ of the Palestinians.
