Turkey‘s Defence Minister Yaşar Güler defended the so-called two-state solution for Cyprus as the only currently viable way to end the long-running conflict on the divided Mediterranean island. “As of now, the only and final solution is based on the fact that there are two separate states and two separate peoples on the island,” Güler said in a speech yesterday to parliament, in which he assured that for the Turkish government the solution to the conflict in Cyprus is a top priority, always respecting the rights and guaranteeing the security of Turkish Cypriots.
In his speech, Güler referred to the positive relations between Turkey and Greece, endorsed by Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent visit to Athens, and expressed Ankara’s firm desire to “maintain this positive atmosphere” in order to resolve all disputes with the neighbouring country. “We want to solve our problems in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean according to international laws, with good neighbourly relations, and in a spirit of alliance,” he assured. Cyprus has been divided into two halves – one Turkish-majority in the north and one Greek-majority in the south – since 1974, and so far all attempts to reunify the island – including a UN peace plan approved in 2004 only by Turkish Cypriots – have failed.
