Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan criticised Western countries for “legitimising” what he once again described as Israel’s massacres in Gaza. “Aren’t they the ones who use concepts such as human rights, democracy, freedom or security to justify even the atrocities committed by Israel?”, Erdoğan questioned during an event today in Turkey’s capital, Ankara.
“The West is an expert in finding justifications for colonialism,” he continued. “They are the ones who devoured everything there was but did not have enough, and asked if there was more. They themselves are the ones who have set the world on fire,” the Turkish president said during an event marking the anniversary of the creation of Turkey’s national anthem. These statements come as at least 31,184 people have already died in Gaza – according to sources in the Hamas-controlled Gazan health ministry – as a result of the brutal offensive launched by Israel in October last year.
