An average of 63 women die every day in Gaza, 37 of them women with children who “leave their families behind”, as a result of attacks by the offensive launched by Israel in October that has so far killed nearly 31,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, while the survivors now face hunger and a famine that has reached “catastrophic levels”, according to UN officials.
“On International Women’s Day, women in Gaza continue to suffer the consequences of this brutal war,” the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said in a statement. “At least 9,000 women have been killed, and many more are under the rubble. On average, 63 women are killed in Gaza every day, 37 of whom are mothers”.
Besides these figures, there is a tremendous famine that has plagued the enclave since the start of Israel’s war in Gaza, which is causing severe malnutrition problems, to the extent that the vast majority of Palestinians living in Gaza have lost between 5 and 10 kilos in weight, and in some areas families are resorting to eat animal feed. An estimated 60,000 pregnant women in Gaza are suffering from malnutrition and dehydration. The situation is so dire that even the US – Israel’s main ally – has denounced the situation and has begun airdropping food rations, while planning more aid shipments by sea.
“Women are giving birth without the most basic medical care. They lack menstrual hygiene products and privacy, and are living in exceptionally unhygienic conditions,” the UN refugee agency said, adding that 95% of pregnant or lactating women in Gaza face severe food shortages, and that nearly nine out of 10 women “have more problems than men in obtaining food”.
