The historic Habib-i Najjar Mosque, built in 638 in Antioch (present-day Antakya, in the Turkish province of Hatay) during the Arab invasions of the Byzantine Empire, and considered the oldest in Anatolia, has been one of the buildings destroyed by the earthquake in this region of southern Turkey. The mosque, which bears the name of a Christian martyr who is also mentioned in the Koran, was erected by Arab conquerors on top of a Christian church, itself built on top of an ancient pagan temple, and changed hands throughout history until it was destroyed in 1853 by an earthquake that only left the original minaret standing; rebuilt by the Ottomans, 170 years later the minaret has not been able to withstand the force of the two earthquakes of 7.8 and 7.6 that have hit the region.
