12 dead, 19 injured in bus crash in Turkey

At least 12 people were killed and 19 others injured in Turkey following a serious bus crast late yesterday in the Sorgun district of Yozgat province, some 250 kilometres east of the Turkish capital, Ankara. The bus, carrying 31 people and travelling between Sivas and Istanbul, went off the road in the middle of the night on the outskirts of the town, and plunged down a 30-metre slope.

Eleven people died on the spot as a result of the accident, while another died later in hospital, where another of the passenger injured is being treated with a serious condition. The causes of the accident are still being investigated, but initial indications point to negligence on the part of the driver, according to the governor of this central province of Turkey, since according to survivors’ testimonies, the bus hit the median on the left for no reason and then the safety barrier on the right, until it fell down the slope.
