Iran demanded immediate explanations from Pakistan after this country carried out a series of air strikes on several towns along the Iranian border this morning, causing 9 deaths, in what appears to be a retaliatory strike following a similar action launched a day earlier by Iran against alleged terrorist group positions on Pakistani territory.
Iranian media confirmed the deaths of three women and four children as a result of explosions caused by Pakistani bombing in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan. The Pakistani foreign ministry confirmed that “Pakistan carried out this morning a series of coordinated and high-precision military strikes against terrorist targets in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province. This action is a demonstration of Pakistan’s unwavering resolve to protect and defend its national security against all threats”.
All indications are that this operation is a retaliatory strike by Pakistan following the attacks launched by Iran a day earlier, which the government in Islamabad had denounced as a “provocation” and a “blatant violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty”, and for which the Pakistani government recalled its ambassador to Iran. Similar action was taken by Iraq, which recalled its ambassador to Tehran for consultations after Iran’s missile strikes killed four people in the city of Irbil, in Iraqi Kurdistan. The US has condemned Iran’s attacks, while China, an ally of Iran and Pakistan, has called for restraint on both sides.
