Two buildings collapsed during metro construction works on the Göztepe-Ümraniye metro line in the Ümraniye district, on the outskirts of Istanbul‘s Asian side. The event occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time (9:30 CET) in the Elmalıkent neighbourhood, when in the course of work in the area a partial subsidence of the ground occurred, causing the partial collapse of one of the buildings and the appearance of large cracks in the structure.
The subsidence of the ground also trapped a car, which was suspended on the edge of the hole in the ground. Several Istanbul emergency crews rushed to the scene and cut off access for dozens of metres around both buildings. Shortly afterwards, both structures eventually collapsed in full view of the cameras. Authorities reported that the buildings had been evacuated 3 months earlier for safety reasons when experts determined that they were at risk from the metro works, so there were no casualties or injuries.
