US government sources confirmed Friday that Israel has carried out a retaliatory military strike inside Iranian territory in response to Iran’s massive drone and missile strikes against several targets in Israel a few days ago for the bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, in a dangerous new step towards extending the war in Gaza to the entire Middle East .
A senior US official confirmed that the White House was notified in advance that Israel would carry out a retaliatory strike against Iran in the coming days; shortly before, air defence systems were activated in several Iranian cities after Iranian state media reported early today at least three explosions near a large military base outside the central Iranian city of Isfahan.
Iran’s semi-official FARS news agency said the military base housed several fighter jets, and that one of the targets hit could be a military radar. FARS said the three explosions occurred near Qahjavarestan, around Isfahan airport, and at the Shekari military airbase, while Iranian space agency spokesman Hossein Dalirian said that “several drones” were “successfully shot down”.
The same sources confirmed, however, that facilities related to Iran’s nuclear program, which Israel considers a threat to its national security, are “completely secure”, adding that the early morning attack appeared to be rather limited in scope. “Following the activation of anti-aircraft defences in some parts of the country (…) reports indicate that so far there are no large-scale attacks or explosions caused by any aerial threat,” Iranian state media reported.
The reports of a possible Israeli retaliatory strike against Iran, confirmed by the US, come just hours after Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian warned that if Israel carried out any new military action against Iran, the Iranian response would be “immediate and at the highest level”. “If the Israeli regime makes the grave mistake again, our response will be decisive and definitive, and they will regret it,” he said, adding that this warning has been communicated to the United States through the Swiss embassy in Tehran.
