Israel bombed the headquarters of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Monday, a moment that occurred while the state television station was broadcasting live and forced it to suddenly cut the broadcast, as seen in the video released of the incident.
Iranian state broadcaster IRIB TV later confirmed in a statement, quoted by agencies, that one of its buildings had been attacked in recent hours by Israel in what it described as a‘brutal aggression’, while assuring that broadcasts of all its channels continue uninterrupted.
In a video of the bombing released by Iran’s own media, an Iranian state television presenter can be seen shouting anti-Israeli slogans when suddenly the camera is then shaken by a loud explosion amid a great roar, as debris begins to fall and the presenter leaves the studio. In the background, some employees can be heard shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is the Greatest). A few minutes later, the live broadcast resumed and the same presenter reappeared in front of the cameras.
The attack came after Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, claimed that Iran’s state broadcaster was ‘about to disappear’: ‘The Iranian propaganda and incitement megaphone is about to disappear,’ said in a statement Katz, who in other controversial statements had threatened Tehran residents that they would ‘pay the price, soon ’ for last night’s bombings on Tel Aviv, which left eight dead and dozens wounded.
The Israeli army had issued an evacuation order about an hour before the bombing for residents of Tehran’s 3rd district, where the headquarters of Iranian state television are located but also several ministries and foreign embassies, as well as three major hospitals, including one belonging to the Revolutionary Guard: an order affecting some 330,000 residents of the centre of the Iranian capital. A spokesman for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Israeli air force has achieved ‘full aerial superiority over Tehran’s skies’ and can carry out its attacks almost unopposed.
