Turkey announced that it will impose sanctions against Israel from 9 April, including restrictions on exports of various construction materials and agricultural products, after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan denounced yesterday the Israeli government’s blocking of Ankara’s request to airdrop humanitarian aid over Gaza.
The measures approved today by Turkey’s trade ministry, and ratified by Turkish president Tayyip Erdoğan, contain a list of a total of 54 products against which export restrictions are imposed to Israel, including aluminium, steel, iron, cement and other construction materials, as well as fertilisers and jet fuel, among others.
“This decision will remain in force until Israel declares an immediate ceasefire and allows an adequate and uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza,” Turkey’s trade ministry said. Israel has already announced that it will respond by imposing its own sanctions on the import of certain goods from Turkey.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced yesterday that Turkey would impose sanctions on Israel over the Gaza war and after the Israeli government rejected Ankara’s request to participate in humanitarian aid drops on Gaza. “There is no excuse for Israel to obstruct our airlifts of aid to the starving Gazans. In response, we have decided to take a series of measures against Israel,” Fidan said, adding that they would begin to be implemented “step by step” but “without delay”. Turkey is currently the second largest aid donor to Gaza since the start of the Israeli offensive, which has already claimed the lives of more than 33,000 Palestinians.
