Turkey welcomed the decision adopted by the UN Security Council, which finally passed on Monday a joint resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the first time. “We consider the Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan and access to humanitarian aid for Gaza, to be a positive step,” Turkish foreign spokesman Öncü Keçeli said in a statement.
“We call on the international community to unite against Israel to put an end to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and to find a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” added the Turkish foreign ministry spokesman, who expressed doubts, however, that Israel would comply with the requirements of the UN mandate.
The resolution Turkey refers to, passed by the 14-member UN Security Council on Monday, was only possible after the United States decided for the first time not to use its veto power to protect its ally Israel and abstained in the vote; the text calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza – where more than 32,000 Palestinians have already been killed by the Israeli offensive. The resolution also demands the release of all hostages still held by Hamas since it launched its massive surprise attack on 7 October, but without linking this release to the demand for an immediate cessation of violence.
