A tourist boat sank this afternoon off the coast of Cennet Island (Paradise Island), located in the Marmaris district of Muğla province – on the Aegean coast of Turkey – in an incident that could have ended in tragedy, although ultimately the 110 passengers on board were rescued safe and sound.
The incident occurred at around 15:30 Turkish time (14:30 CET) on Friday, when – according to initial reports – the boat named ‘Bigboss Diamond’, which had set sail with 110 passengers for a popular tourist trip around this region of the Aegean Sea, suffered a malfunction for reasons that have not yet been clarified.
After the problem was detected, the vessel was directed to a point near the coast, where the tourists were transferred safely and promptly to another boat operating tours for the same company and which was in the vicinity, according to the Turkish news agency DHA.
With the passengers evacuated, the boat – which apparently had taken on water – began to sink. After receiving the alert, teams from the Coastguard made their way to the scene, where several witnesses recorded shocking footage of the incident on their mobile phones, showing how the vessel began to list to port before sinking completely into the Aegean Sea.
The videos also show a man who was still on board jumping into the sea at the last moment, just as the tourist boat was already listing irreversibly before disappearing beneath the waves.
