Turkey’s foreign minister, Hakan Fidan, warned during a television interview last night that with the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, Israel “has also killed peace”, accusing the Netanyahu government of taking the United States hostage and leading the entire region to war.
“They should not forget that by killing him (Haniyeh), they have also killed peace,” Fidan said during the televised interview, broadcast by Turkey’s Ülke TV, in which the Turkish foreign minister also claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has “taken the United States hostage”. “Netanyahu is well aware of this. He has taken America hostage. If he goes to war with Lebanon, the US will have no choice but to go to war to support him,” he warned.
Asked about the consequences of Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran – which occurred precisely when Hakan Fidan himself was in the Iranian capital to attend the ceremony for the new president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian – the minister described it as “an extremely symbolic action” since with his death Israel is sending a message not only to Hamas but also to Iran itself, which has always supported the Palestinian group militarily.
Fidan, who stressed that Israel “will not stop stealing lands”, nevertheless warned Israeli leaders that eliminating Hamas or even Hezbollah will not bring peace: “What they fail to understand is that it is not Hamas or Hezbollah that generates (Palestinian) resistance; it is Israel’s own actions. If it wasn’t Hamas today, there would be another movement in Palestine. This is going to continue. As long as Israel’s expansionism in the region persists, there will be opposition and resistance”.
For the Turkish foreign minister, what Israel is looking for now is an excuse to attack Hezbollah in Lebanon. Fidan also condemned Israel’s warmongering policy during the interview, and recalled that Israel’s expansionism in the Middle East is supported by Zionism, a nationalist ideology – alien to Judaism – which Turkey opposes and which justifies the theft of other people’s land to create a state, he said.
