Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan sharply criticised on Friday the US Congress for applauding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he defined again as the ‘Hitler of our time’, recalling that he has ‘the blood of over 150,000 Palestinians on his hands’.
‘The whole world saw how the genocidal murderer was applauded in the U.S. Congress. Those who give lessons of democracy and human rights to the world do not show an ounce of shame when they crown the Hitler of our time,’ Erdoğan said in remarks made from Istanbul and reported by Turkish media.
‘We are face to face with an eclipse of reason that not only hosts a butcher with the blood of over 150,000 Gazans on his hands but also applauds him for his speech full of delirium,’ added the Turkish president, who appeared to be referring to data from a recent study published this month by The Lancet that claims that the real death toll in Gaza could reach 186,000 Palestinians “or even more”.
Netanyahu’s remarks to the US Congress have been widely criticised around the world, and not just by Erdoğan; the Israeli leader, who received dozens of standing ovations during his speech, claimed that the operation against Hamas in Gaza has one of the ‘lowest ratios of combatants to noncombatant casualties in the history of urban warfare’, despite health sources in Gaza claiming that the war has left nearly 40,000 Palestinians dead, mostly women and children. Also, nearly half of the US Democratic Party members of Congress decided to boycott Netanyahu and not attend his speech.
