Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan reacted sharply on Monday to the Israeli army’s attack on Rafah, south of Gaza, which killed at least 45 Palestinian civilians – mostly women and children – who were in a camp for war-displaced people in one of Israel’s own designated “safe zones”.
“Sunday’s attack in Rafah, which has come after the (UN) International Court of Justice’s order (calling for the cessation of operations in Rafah), has exposed the treacherous and bloody nature of the terrorist state (of Israel),” Erdoğan said in a televised speech, adding to the voices of international condemnation against the massacre.
The Turkish president also lashed again against the Israeli prime minister: “The cornered Netanyahu and his network of murderers are trying to prolong their power by massacring people, because they are failing to defeat the Palestinian resistance,” Erdoğan declared. “Netanyahu will not be able to save himself… like Milosevic, Karadzic or Hitler, whom he is imitating,” added the Turkish leader, who promised that Turkey will do everything in its power to make these “savages” pay for their crimes.
While Erdoğan’s was one of the harshest voices expressing outrage at the Rafah massacre, he was far from the only one. French President Emmanuel Macron himself, whose country initially showed a more lukewarm stance, called on Monday for an “immediate ceasefire” and “full compliance with international law”. “These operations must stop. There are no safe zones in Rafah for Palestinian civilians,” Macron wrote in a message in English on the social networking site X, formerly Twitter. The Netanyahu government argues that despite the ICJ order, it is allowed to continue to carry out certain military actions in Gaza; in the case of last night’s attack, the Israeli army claimed to have shelled a Hamas camp.
