Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan phoned Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to discuss the crisis in Gaza and the humanitarian catastrophe facing Palestinians, in a conversation in which the two leaders also addressed several issues related to relations between Spain and Turkey.
According to Turkish media – citing a statement from the communications office of the Presidency of the Turkish Republic – during the conversation the two leaders discussed bilateral relations between Ankara and Madrid as well as regional and global issues, but mainly the situation in Gaza, especially following the latest massacre committed by the Israeli army, which last night bombed a camp for displaced people in Rafah, killing dozens of civilians, mostly women and children, despite the fact that they were in one of the “safe zones” designated by Israel.
During the meeting via telephone, Erdoğan insisted that attacks against Palestinian civilians by the Israeli army must stop as soon as possible, and that Israel must be forced to comply with international law, including the mandate made by the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The Turkish president also again expressed his congratulations to Spain on Madrid’s announcement to recognise the independence of Palestine along with Ireland and Norway, which will take place tomorrow 28 May: a move that Erdoğan believes will contribute to peace and justice in the region, as well as to efforts towards the two-state solution.
In his speech last week announcing his decision to recognise Palestine as a sovereign and independent state, Sánchez explained that he had held talks with several leaders on the situation of the Palestinians and that his conclusion was clear: “Netanyahu does not have a peace project for Palestine“. The Spanish prime minister also said of the Israeli prime minister that he refuses to listen to the international community, and that meanwhile he continues razing Gaza and blocking the much-needed humanitarian aid for the civilian population.
