Turkey could soon close a deal with China to build its third nuclear power plant, to be located in the European region of Turkish Thrace (near the border with Greece and Bulgaria), according to a recent announcement by Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, who told a Chinese TV channel a few days ago that the deal could be ready ‘in a few months’.
Bayraktar made these statements during a recent visit to China during which he held meetings with Chinese authorities and executives of several Chinese companies, and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Beijing government for cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy transition. ‘We will be able to conclude all these negotiations with the Chinese company. NEA (China’s National Energy Administration) has full support for this (nuclear) project, which will be a key project between Turkey and China,’ Bayraktar told the Chinese broadcaster.
The minister also referred to Turkey’s interest in cooperating with China in other areas such as mining or renewable energy, with the aim of reducing its foreign energy dependence and contributing to mitigate the effects of climate change. ‘We are very likely to sign an agreement with the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources for cooperation in mining. We want to focus especially on critical minerals,’ he said.
Turkey wants to finalise plans for what will be its third nuclear power plant, after the second planned for Sinop on Turkey’s Black Sea coast and the first – already in the final stages of construction – at Mersin on the country’s southern coast, which with a final capacity of 4,800 megawatts has been designed by Russian atomic energy giant Rosatom and will provide 10% of Turkey’s energy needs.
