A car pile-up this morning in northwest Turkey on the Anatolia Motorway, which connects Istanbul with Ankara, left at least 10 people injured after 10 cars collided in a chain of crashes for reasons that are still being investigated, and which could be related to bad weather.
According to Turkish media reports, the accident occurred at around 8 a.m. on the O-4 highway in the direction of Ankara as it passes through the province of Sakarya, near the Yeni Mahalle neighbourhood in the town of Sapanca, and at a time when the asphalt was wet due to the rains of the last few hours.
A total of ten vehicles were involved in the multiple collision. After the emergency services were alerted, gendarmerie personnel and several ambulances were sent to the scene of the accident, confirming that 10 people had been injured to varying degrees, and after receiving initial assistance at the scene, they were taken to local hospitals.
As a result of the multiple collision, traffic on the O-4 motorway lane in the direction of the Turkish capital had to be temporarily closed, causing long queues and traffic jams, which were diverted to the central lane until the cars involved in the accident could be removed from the road. An investigation has been launched, but initial indications are that the chain collision was caused by the slippery state of the asphalt due to the presence of rainwater.
