One person died and more than 50 were injured, several seriously, after a collision between two metro buses at a bus stop in the Beylikdüzü district, west of Istanbul, during the weekend. The causes of the serious accident are still unknown, but the incident has once again brought public attention to concerns about the high number of metrobus and bus accidents, since metrobus is one of the main public transport systems in Istanbul, a metropolis of 16 million inhabitants.
Turkish media reported that the accident occurred on Saturday morning when a metro bus travelling in the lane reserved for metro buses collided with another similar vehicle that was stopped while picking up passengers at the Haramidere Sanayi stop, located in the Beylikdüzü district on the outskirts of the European side of Istanbul.
The violent impact threw passengers to the floor in both vehicles and caused one of the people at the stop to become trapped under one of the metro buses, which suffered significant damage, including the breaking of all its windows. The moment was captured by security cameras installed inside the vehicles.
Immediately after the impact, many passengers rushed out of the wrecked metro buses, forcing the doors open in an attempt to escape, while the emergency services were alerted and took the numerous injured to hospital. A total of 54 people were injured in the accident, three of them seriously, while a 37-year-old woman identified as Ebru Heper died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The incident forced the station to be closed and metro bus traffic in the area to be halted. The causes of the accident are still unknown, according to Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, who nevertheless indicated that 44 of the 54 people injured in the crash were discharged from hospital a few hours later. Traffic cameras in the area also captured the moment when one of the metro buses inexplicably crashed into the one at the stop.
