Up to 38 balloons from 27 different countries are flying over the incredible landscapes of Cappadocia from today until Sunday 10 August, thanks to the international hot air balloon competition that is being held these days as part of the so-called Cultural Route Festival of Nevşehir, a Turkish province located in the heart of Turkey’s historic Cappadocia region.
According to Turkish media reports, the spectacular event began with the first light of day in the tourist town of Göreme, from where dozens of balloons of all kinds of colours and shapes took off one after another. “In 2024, Cappadocia broke records for flights and passengers. Last year, some 770,000 people took balloon tours. In the first 7 months of this year, the number of passengers grew by 10% and flights increased by 4%. We are on track to set another tourist record by the end of 2025,” said Nevşehir Governor Ali Fidan.
Halis Aydoğan, one of the organisers of the festival, added that in Cappadocia balloon flights take place 250 days a year. “This is the 6th edition of our balloon festival and we have welcomed 38 special balloons from 27 countries. We are very grateful to the Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism for their continuous support. The growing interest in the festival is really encouraging,” he said.
“This is the second time this year that I come to Cappadocia. Everything here is amazing,” commented Le Andreo, a balloon pilot from Poland. “It is very beautiful here. There is really a unique atmosphere,” said Serkan Genç, one of the people who has travelled to Göreme to attend the Nevşehir Cultural Route Festival, which – in addition to the spectacular balloon flights over Cappadocia– until 10 August will offer nearly 400 events, including concerts, performances, film screenings, lectures and workshops.
