Balloons from 17 countries take part in spectacular air show in Cappadocia

A total of 35 hot air balloons from 17 countries, including Turkey, are taking part in the Turkish town of Ürgüp in the spectacular Cappadocia Balloon and Cultural Route Festival, organised by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism in the province of Nevşehir.

Turkish media reported that the festival, which comes to Nevşehir as the last stage of a tour that has taken it to 6 other locations in Turkey, and in which balloons in all kinds of shapes and colours have been seen, is being held between 3 and 11 August and also includes other activities such as concerts, exhibitions, workshops and gastronomic tastings, talks and street theatre performances. The festival organisers have announced that, if the weather conditions are favourable, there will also be balloon air shows this weekend.

Balloons in the shape of hearts, badges, Turkish flags, cars, rockets, cows, elephants, foxes and cartoon characters have been seen over the skies of nearby Göreme during this festival, delighting local and foreign tourists alike. Balloon tours are one of the great attractions of the Turkish region of Cappadocia, also known for its unique “fairy chimney” formations, its ancient rock-hewn churches and its underground cities.
