Aerial and ground means continue fighting this Monday for the second day against several wildfires unleashed in southern Turkey, specifically in the provinces of Hatay and Mersin, as well as in Çanakkale, in the northwest of the country, amid a succession of heat waves that have left record temperatures in the region.
One of the wildfires, which broke out yesterday at noon in the Belen district of Hatay when two individuals imprudently burned some stubble from their garden, spread rapidly, fueled by strong winds, affecting several wooded areas and forcing dozens of people to be evacuated, burning 7 houses and 4 vehicles. In addition to the forest fires in Hatay, Mersin and Çanakkale, which continue to burn uncontrollably, 16 other wildfires that have already been brought under control broke out across Turkey on Sunday. Turkish authorities ask the population to exercise extreme caution due to the high temperatures caused by the heat wave.
