The arrival of a new unprecedented heat wave will leave extreme temperatures in Turkey, which in some regions such as southeastern Anatolia could reach 50ºC, experts warn. Şermin Tağıl, head of the Department of Geography at Izmir Bakırçay University, told the Anatolia news agency that due to climate change, global temperatures have reached levels never seen in human history since the beginning of July, and this is especially affecting the Mediterranean basin and Turkey.
The city of Cizre in the province of Şırnak, in the southeast of the country, registered the highest temperature in the history of Turkey on July 20, 2021: 49.1 ºC; however, Tağıl predicts that in the next few days that same region will reach 50ºC due to the heat wave, breaking a new record. In cities such as Ankara or Istanbul, the weather forecast indicates that temperatures will rise practically 10ºC from Wednesday onwards compared to the current ones, reaching 37ºC over the weekend, although the thermal sensation will be around 40ºC.
