Alarm was raised last night in Istanbul after a possible case of monkeypox (mpox) was detected in a person of African origin in the Beyoğlu district in the very heart of the city, forcing several medical teams to intervene and quarantine the patient.
Numerous media reports late yesterday reported that a person showing possible symptoms of mpox had been quarantined in Beyoğlu (Istanbul) amidst a large deployment of medical resources, with several teams intervening wearing special protective suits. The video of the intervention was broadcast on social media, where it was widely circulated.
Despite the alarm, the Turkish press reported this morning that the patient had tested negative for monkeypox virus. According to these reports, tests on samples of the patient’s skin lesions concluded that the rashes were caused by a medication he was taking, and not as a result of a virus.
‘Reports were shared on social media that a foreign citizen in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul had monkeypox. The person was taken to a hospital for tests and medical examinations in accordance with health protocols. As a result of these examinations, it was determined that this person did not have mpox,’ the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate said in a statement. ‘We have a strong health infrastructure and the necessary equipment and capabilities to monitor and control infectious diseases. We ask not to rely on news based on unknown sources circulating on social media,’ the statement added.
