Fears of a severe drought are growing in Turkey after a winter that has been rather warm compared to normal temperatures in this region, and with little rainfall. Fear of restrictions and cuts in water supply is growing especially in large cities such as Ankara, İzmir or Istanbul: in this province, rainfall has been reduced by 52%, and after a dry autumn there are no prospects for improvement in the medium term, while meteorologists already point to 2023 as the driest year of this century. Some dams that provide water to İzmir, the 3rd largest city in Turkey, are at 36% capacity, while a year ago they were at 88%. And experts warn: Climate change will bring more droughts equal to or worse than this one in years to come.
