Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar, the two co-chairmen of the HDP, the Kurdish nationalist party that dominates politics in several eastern and southeastern provinces of Turkey, have announced that they will not run for re-election at the next party congress after the poor results obtained in the recent elections in Turkey, in which the HDP candidates received less than 9% of the votes nationwide, compared to almost 12% that the party obtained in 2018, losing 6 seats in the Turkish parliament. The HDP had to compete on the lists of the Green Left Party (Yeşil Sol Parti): a maneuver forced by the possible closure that the HDP faces before the courts for its alleged links with the PKK terrorist group.
In fact, the HDP did not even present its own candidate for the Turkish Presidency as it did 5 years ago, and instead chose to support the candidate of the opposition coalition, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, whose future has also been left in doubt after his defeat in the presidential elections. Precisely, the former co-chairman and candidate to Turkey’s Presidency of the HDP, Selahattin Demirtaş, announced a few days ago his quit of politics in a message in which he charged against the current leaders of the Kurdish nationalist party, blaming them for the poor results in the elections and for turning a party of national scope in “a local association”. In an article published in Turkish media, Demirtaş lamented that the HDP “did not realize the importance of these elections until it was too late,” calling the party’s elections campaign “shoddy.”
