Dozens of people – up to more than 100 according to some media – were arrested in the last few hours in Kyrgyzstan, in a large operation against an important plot that included the military and civil servants, that apparently were planning a coup against the elected government. The state security service (GKNB) reported the arrests, explaining that those arrested planned to organize protests and riots to “seize power by force.” Kyrgyzstan is an impoverished Turkic republic of Central Asia that was once part of the USSR; despite having a democratic regime since the revolts of 2010, tensions due to ethnic conflicts, economic problems, corruption and instability of governments continue to dominate the country.
