Several fires that broke out in the last few hours and throughout the night in different areas of Istanbul sparked panic among residents on the European side of Istanbul, according to Turkish media reports. The first of these occurred close to midnight – at 22:45 yesterday evening – in the Hürriyet neighbourhood of the Kağıthane district on the outskirts of the city, when a car began to burn while its driver was parking it on the street.
Upon noticing the flames coming out of the engine, the driver tried to escape from the car, which he managed to with difficulty, while the vehicle continued to roll until it hit a pole; despite the rapid intervention of the firemen, the fire consumed the car and it ended up completely burnt and unusable. The exact causes of the incident are unknown, but a neighbour reported that the driver had just brought the car from the technician after a repair: “It had just parked and the car suddenly caught fire and turned into a ball of flames. Thank God it didn’t hit the electricity post, or the whole neighbourhood would have burned down,” he said.
The second fire-related incident occurred in the early hours of this morning at around 2 p.m. in the Fatih district of Istanbul’s historic centre, when a fire broke out on the top floor of a five-storey block on Küçük Saray Meydanı Street, in the Şehremini neighbourhood. Despite quickly alerting other neighbours and the emergency services, the flames spread to another building. Firefighters eventually managed to extinguish the blaze despite difficulties due to the narrow streets in this area of Istanbul, through which they could barely manoeuvre. The cause of the fire, which did not cause any injuries but did cause significant damage to both buildings, is not yet known.
