The recently re-elected Turkish president, Tayyip Erdoğan, has said that one of the first things his AKP party will do in parliament will be to promote a reform of Article 41 of the Turkish Constitution that shields the definition of marriage, establishing it as a union between a man and a woman in order to prohibit homosexual marriage. “Stability, and confidence,” he said at a press conference after a meeting of his new cabinet, speaking of the lines of his new government. “And I say something else: we will take all kinds of measures, including the creation of a Bank for the Family and Youth, to protect the family, which is the nucleus of our society, against aberrant trends,” he declared. The AKP and its nationalist allies achieved a majority in parliament after the elections, but will need at least 40 more deputies to be able to bring the constitutional reform to a referendum.
