A massive sandstorm from the Sahara desert has sparked an alert in Turkey, where it is expected to arrive from today, particularly affecting people with respiratory problems, who have been asked by the authorities to take extra precautions over the next few days.
Speaking to Turkish media, Professor Doğan Yaşar, a climatology expert, explained that “reddish desert sand laden with iron particles will arrive in large quantities” in Turkey from 25 March, exacerbating respiratory problems and allergy symptoms “such as dry coughing or sneezing, especially in people with asthma and other respiratory system problems”.
To avoid the worst consequences of this sandstorm from the Sahara that will hit Turkey in the coming days, the expert advised “wearing a mask that retains particles for three weeks“. “Normal masks can also offer some protection,” added Yaşar, who again stressed the need to be aware of “the potential risks, especially for those with health problems“.
