A team of experts in Turkey has begun restoring several of the famous ‘fairy chimneys’ that dot the breathtaking landscapes of Cappadocia, one of the most visited regions by tourists, with the aim of ensuring that they will last for thousands of years to come.
Restoration and conservation work is currently being carried out on four of these emblematic chimneys as they require the most immediate measures, but a committee of experts is already studying what conservation measures to carry out in the medium term on at least nine other fairy chimneys. Speaking to Turkish media, Birol İnceciköz, chairman of the Cappadocia Region Directorate, stressed that the project will use scientific methods to preserve these unique rock formations, in a process that involves meticulous documentation and addressing structural problems with the chimneys.
“We will carry out various interventions established by science so that these unique elements that are a fundamental value in the region are preserved for future generations, with the aim of prolonging their existence and avoiding any danger to people’s lives or property,” İnceciköz said, insisting that this task involves enormous scientific precision to ensure that these rock formations that make Cappadocia’s landscape famous are not damaged in any way.
“After carrying out the documentation studies, new rocky areas have emerged. We have identified areas within the fairy chimneys that had been hidden by rocks and rubble for a long time. Thanks to the new data obtained, we studied the fairy chimneys and prepared a restoration project,” he explained.
Once the restoration work on the fairy chimneys in Cappadocia is completed, tourists from both Turkey and abroad will be able to visit the fairy chimneys more safely, and the formations will last for several thousand years, Inceciköz says.
