Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan challenged US President Joe Biden to review Turkey’s historical Ottoman archives on Armenians, after Biden acknowledged the existence of the Armenian genocide on Saturday. “I speak based on evidence, not like Biden. We have more than a million documents about what happened in 1915. I wonder how many the United States has (to say that there was a genocide),” wondered Erdoğan, who accused Biden of giving up to the pressure of Armenian radicals and recalled several events in US history that could be considered genocide. “Our position has not changed: what happened in 1915 can only be clarified by historians, not by politicians,” he added. Turkey acknowledges the death of thousands of Armenians in 1915 but denies that it was a genocide, and claims to have evidence that an equal or greater number of Turks were killed at the hands of Armenian groups armed by Russia.
