King Felipe VI received Erdoğan during the two-day official visit that the Turkish President began yesterday to Spain to attend the 8th Summit between Spain and Turkey with the aim of strengthening the close relations between the two countries, but in which the President of the Turkish Republic wants to discuss with the Spanish government how to put an end to the crisis in Gaza and support efforts for the recognition of the Palestinian State, as the Spanish government did on 22 May.
On his arrival in Madrid aboard the presidential plane, Erdoğan was received by several authorities and the Turkish ambassador to Spain, Nüket Küçükel Ezberci. Afterwards, the Turkish president met with the Spanish monarch Felipe VI at the Zarzuela Royal Palace, where, according to Turkish media citing sources from the Presidency of the Republic, the two leaders discussed ‘relations between Turkey and Spain, the Israeli massacres in Gaza, and current regional and global issues’.
Erdoğan conveyed to the monarch the importance of the position and support shown by Spain towards Palestine, and stressed that the growing international pressure on Israel can achieve a permanent peace in the Middle East, insisting that Israel’s “genocidal policies” against the Palestinians must end as soon as possible. The meeting between the Turkish President and Felipe VI also addressed bilateral relations, and in this sense Erdoğan expressed his conviction that these will continue to deepen, highlighting the growing commercial ties and the potential for cooperation between Spain and Turkey in areas such as the defence industry, which he considered will bring great benefits to both nations.
Official sources in Ankara noted that, during the meeting in Madrid, Erdoğan invited King Felipe VI to visit Turkey “as soon as possible”. As part of his official visit to Spain, the Turkish president will hold a meeting today with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, with whom he will co-chair the 8th Spain-Turkey Intergovernmental Summit, where the two countries are expected to sign some 15 agreements in areas such as trade, finance, culture and sports. Erdoğan also plans to attend the inauguration of a business forum to improve trade and cooperation ties between Turkish and Spanish companies.
