Turkey has welcomed the decision announced by Ireland, Spain and Norway to recognise the independence of the Palestinian state on 28 May, in the midst of Israel’s brutal offensive on Gaza that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, and only two days after the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court asked for an arrest warrant to be issued for Netanyahu and the Israeli foreign minister for their responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
“We are very pleased that Spain, Ireland and Norway announced they will recognize the State of Palestine,” the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement issued from Ankara.
“Recognition of Palestine is a requirement of international law, justice and conscience. It is an extremely important step in terms of taking back the usurped rights of the occupied Palestinian people and helping Palestine gain the status it deserves in the international community,” the statement continued, assuring that Turkey “will continue to strive for more countries to recognize Palestine“.
Turkey’s statement comes after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris announced on Wednesday that Spain and Ireland will recognise Palestine as an independent state on 28 May; the government of Norway also announced today at almost the same time that it will recognise the Palestinian state on the same date.
