Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan praised Spain’s stance on the Palestinian conflict, after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently expressed his regret over the high number of Palestinian civilians killed during a visit to Israel. Erdoğan spoke by phone yesterday with Sánchez, to whom he expressed his desire to increase cooperation between Spain and Turkey to achieve peace in the region.
During the telephone conversation with the Spanish Prime Minister, Erdoğan had praise for the criticism expressed by Sánchez about the massive bombardments launched by the Israeli army on Gaza, as well as for the stance shown by the Spanish politician on the need to implement the two-state solution to achieve peace in the region. Sánchez has also recently announced that Spain could unilaterally recognise the Palestinian state, even if there is no consensus within the EU: “Spain will take its own decisions”, he said.
During the conversation between Erdoğan and Sánchez on the situation in Palestine, the need to maintain the supply of humanitarian aid to Gaza and to achieve a definitive ceasefire was also discussed, Turkish diplomatic sources said. Recently, the Spanish and Turkish foreign ministers, José Manuel Albares and Hakan Fidan, held a meeting in Barcelona in the framework of the summit of the Mediterranean Regional Forum: Israel did not attend the summit, where the Palestinian issue was the main topic to be discussed among the delegations of the 42 countries attending.
