Foreign tourist arrivals to Turkey grew by 8.3% in the first seven months of 2024 compared to last year to almost 29 million visitors in total, according to the latest data released by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
According to data published on Friday on its official website, adding up Turks living abroad who visited the country, a total of 33.47 million people came to Turkey between January and July this year. Russians constituted the largest group with 3.6 million visits (12.5% of the total), followed by Germans with 3.5 million, British (2.4 million), Iranians (1.75 million), and Bulgarians (1.62 million).
Despite the war in Ukraine, the number of Ukrainians travelling to Turkey grew by 15% compared to the same period last year to over half a million (525,000); by contrast, the number of Israeli tourists plummeted by 90% and only 45,483 visited Turkey in the first seven months of the year. Also noteworthy was the increase in tourists from China (231,000, up 103% compared to last year), Japan (66,000, up 82%) and the United States (772,000, up 8%).
By destination, Istanbul continued to be the favourite place for foreign tourists visiting Turkey this year, with the Turkish metropolis receiving 10.5 million visitors between January and July, 36% of the total. It was followed in the ranking by Antalya with 8.49 million visits (29.3% of the total), Edirne (2.83 million) and Muğla (1.9 million).
